Natchez Chapter

When the American Revolution began, the Natchez District was an outpost in British West Florida. During the beginning of the war, Loyalists to England, or those who wished to remain neutral, flocked to Natchez to hopefully escape the rebellion. James Willing led a raiding party up and down the Mississippi river targeting several well-known Tories.

Spain's Louisiana Governor Bernardo de Galvez entered the war and took Natchez as part of the surrender of Manchac/Baton Rouge in October, 1779.   The inhabitants of Natchez had a short rebellion against the Spanish from May - June, 1781.  Then the Spanish took it back after the fall of Pensacola.
